Crowberry and Ginger Smoothie

During my childhood, every autumn my parents picked crowberries and blueberries. My mother always made jam from both types of berries and my father used to make blueberry and crowberry wine (not always with much luck however although he claimed it was delicious). Most households in Iceland pick berries in the autumn and freeze for later use or make jam, juice, compote and more. You only have to drive 10 minutes outside of the main city centre and you will find excellent berry picking spots. You can use blueberries instead of the crowberries if they are not available in your country.

This is a very healthy smoothie, packed with antioxidants and iron from the crowberries. The berries are also rich in fibre and the iron absorption is aided by the orange juice.

You will need a blender or a food processor to make this smoothie.

Crowberry and Ginger Smoothie

Serves 2 people

Ingredients

  • 100 millilitres (3½ fluid oz) orange juice
  • A small piece fresh ginger (equal to a grape in size)
  • 2 handfuls crowberries
  • 1 banana, very ripe
  • 1 teaspoon agave nectar
  • A couple of ice cubes

Preparation

  1. Peel the banana.
  2. Place the banana, 1 teaspoon agave nectar and the 100 millilitres orange juice in a blender or food processor. Blend for 10 seconds.
  3. Peel the ginger (the skin is very thin, you can scrape it off with a teaspoon or a small knife). Grate the ginger finely above the blender so that the juice drips into it.
  4. Add the 2 handfuls crowberries.
  5. Mix for 5 seconds.
  6. Allow the smoothie to rest in the blender for 10 minutes.
  7. Mix again for 5 seconds and serve with a couple of ice cubes.

Tips

  • You can use apple juice instead of the orange juice.
  • You can use a pear instead of the banana if you prefer.
  • You can use maple syrup or acacia honey instead of the agave nectar.
  • If you can't get your hands on crowberries you can use blueberries or blackberries.
