Pineapple Smoothie

This is an excellent smoothie for the digestive system since pineapples contain bromelain, an enzyme that breaks down proteins and is very good for your stomach. Pineapples also include calcium, potassium, fibre, and vitamin C. In addition it is low in fat and cholesterol. Pineapples are also rich in manganese, a trace mineral that is needed for your body to build bone and connective tissues. If your tummy is upset, I recommend drinking this smoothie, it will not only make you feel well on the inside, it's healthy benefits will make you feel well on the outside too (or at least put a smile on your face!).

You will need a blender or a food processor to make this smoothie.

Pineapple Smoothie

Serves 2-3 people

Ingredients

  • 400 grams (14 oz) pineapple, very ripe
  • 150 millilitres (5 fluid oz) orange juice (without added sugar)
  • 1 large banana, very ripe
  • 2 tablespoons cold water
  • A couple of ice cubes

Preparation

  1. To peel the pineapple, place it base side down and carefully slice off the skin, carving out any remaining hard "eyes" with the tip of your knife. Then cut the pineapple into quarters, remove the core (hard part in the middle) and cut 400 grams pineapple into chunks.
  2. Place the ice cubes in a blender or food processor.
  3. Pour the 2 tablespoons cold water on top of the ice cubes. Blend for 5 seconds.
  4. Add the pineapple, 150 millilitres orange juice and the banana.
  5. Blend for 15 seconds or until completely smooth.
  6. Serve immediately.

Tips

  • You can use apple or mango juice instead of orange juice.
