Beet and Apple Detox Juice

This is a fantastically healthy juice, packed with vitamins and antioxidants. Beets (beetroots) contain folic acid which is very good for pregnant women, especially in the first trimester (more specifically for the development of the foetus) and they also contain betacyanin which helps protect against colon cancer, heart diseases and more. I love the deep, red colour of the beets and although I am not particularly keen on their taste (on their own), I really like them combined with something sweet like apples or grapes and even carrots.

You will need a juicer to make this delicious juice. You will also need a blender or a food processor. If you don't own a juicer you can buy the beet juice, apple juice, orange juice and pear juice and combine in a blender along with the banana and some grated ginger.

A vitamin packed juice, very lovely

Beet and Apple Detox Juice

Serves 2 people

Ingredients

  • 50 grams (1½ oz) beet
  • 1 small piece fresh ginger (lika a grape in size)
  • 50 millilitres (1½ fluid oz) orange juice (or one small orange, squeezed)
  • 2 sweet apples, cut into large chunks
  • 1 pear, very ripe, cut into large chunks
  • 1 small banana, very ripe
  • A couple of ice cubes

Preparation

  1. Wash the 50 grams beet, pear and 2 apples and cut in large chunks so that they fit through the juicer's chute.
  2. Place the beet and ginger in the juicer, followed by the 2 apples.
  3. Pour the liquid into a container.
  4. Peel the banana and place in a blender or food processor along with the 50 millilitres orange juice. Blend for 10 seconds.
  5. Add the juice from the container into the blender and blend for 15 seconds.
  6. Pour back into the container and stir well.
  7. Serve immediately with a couple of ice cubes.

Tips

  • You can use a a pear instead of the apple.
  • You can use more ginger if you prefer a stronger ginger taste.
  • You can also add a small piece of pineapple for an even sweeter taste.
  • If you don't own a juicer, you can buy beet juice, pear juice, apple juice and orange juice from a health food store and grate the ginger very finely (using only the juice).
